Colombia Losing Market Share in U.S.

Miguel Barbosa, Rio de Janeiro (CoffeeNetwork) Colombia posted a loss of market share in the U.S. coffee market in 2010. According to the Department of Commerce, the Colombian market share of green coffee fell to 13% last year, compared with 16% in 2009.

Brazil and Vietnam, by contrast, increased their share from 27% to 30% in Brazil’s case, and from 14% to 19% in Vietnam’s.

Colombia dropped to third place in terms of quantity of supplies of green coffee to the U.S., behind Vietnam.

In the terms of value however, Colombia remains firmly in second place, even though it exported 12% less.  Exports from the country grew 16% in value in 2010. Colombian coffee sold at an average price of $ 273.90 per 60 kg. bag, a price only surpassed by Kenya, which sold for $ 358 per bag in 2010. However, Kenya exported only 89,800 bags to the U.S., while Colombia exported 2.68 Million bags.

A country worth noting is Ethiopia, which exported 297,700 bags and earned $ 68.57 million from its U.S. coffee exports in 2010. These figures represented an increase of 54% in quantity and 87% in value from the previous year.
