The Piazza’s gelateria Nana Petrillo’s (1001 N. Second St.) recently switched up its coffee service to the hand-brewed pourover method — grinding the beans on demand, then brewing it through a quick-drip filter — that’s recently started catching on in Philly. This made-to-order system ensures that the coffee is as fresh as possible. There are only two bean varieties available right now (Tanzanian peaberry and Sumatra), but be on the lookout for additions from local roasters Cafe Excellence, like Brazilian Sweet Blue and Ethiopian Yirgacheffe.

A Grand Opening: Alfio returns to toss Caesars
as Ana’s Corner Store joins the neighborhood

Ana's Father Alfio and daughter Thereasa
Ana Ferry, co-owner of the brand new Ana’s Corner Store in East Norriton, has a different take on the familiar. When it comes to serving the public, she and her brother, Richard Gaglianese, want to fill a void that the traditional convenience store probably can’t.

When Ferry’s brother approached her with the idea of purchasing the business, she thought it a good idea since she was unemployed at the time. Ever since, things have been coming together nicely, and during the weekend of Jan. 29 and 30, Ferry and her brother will be hosting the Grand Opening of the store from noon until 5 p.m. both days.

Joining them will be their father, Alfio Gaglianese, the famed (retired) owner of Alfio’s Italian Restaurant in Glenside and Philadelphia. He was also the maitre d’ of DaVinci’s in Philadelphia for 16 years.

If his name is familiar to you, his face will be even more so. He is not only a restaurateur but a celebrated master of the Caesar salad, winning several awards, including a “Best of Philly” and “Best of the ’Burbs” for his exquisite Caesar salad.

On tap for Ana’s Corner Store will be the traditional grocery store items along with specialty items. In addition to homemade soups, breads and breakfast sandwiches, they have planned a full kitchen and full-service grill for the near future.

“We plan to support local businesses,” said Ferry. They’ll be incorporating the goods from Corropolese Bakery, Merrymead Farms, Café Excellence coffee and Mr. Ron’s coleslaw among several others.

Colombia Losing Market Share in the U.S.

Colombia Losing Market Share in U.S.

Miguel Barbosa, Rio de Janeiro (CoffeeNetwork) Colombia posted a loss of market share in the U.S. coffee market in 2010. According to the Department of Commerce, the Colombian market share of green coffee fell to 13% last year, compared with 16% in 2009.

Brazil and Vietnam, by contrast, increased their share from 27% to 30% in Brazil’s case, and from 14% to 19% in Vietnam’s.

Colombia dropped to third place in terms of quantity of supplies of green coffee to the U.S., behind Vietnam.

In the terms of value however, Colombia remains firmly in second place, even though it exported 12% less.  Exports from the country grew 16% in value in 2010. Colombian coffee sold at an average price of $ 273.90 per 60 kg. bag, a price only surpassed by Kenya, which sold for $ 358 per bag in 2010. However, Kenya exported only 89,800 bags to the U.S., while Colombia exported 2.68 Million bags.

A country worth noting is Ethiopia, which exported 297,700 bags and earned $ 68.57 million from its U.S. coffee exports in 2010. These figures represented an increase of 54% in quantity and 87% in value from the previous year.

How many milligrams of caffeine is in your coffee?

Recently I was asked this question.  Although I have been in the coffee business since 1984, I have never been asked how many milligrams of caffeine are in coffee, let alone our coffee.  This has been an interesting project for me.  I found out that my previous belief of coffee containing 4% caffeine was incorrect and that it’s between 1.2% and 1.8%.  I found out a lot of new information is available.  Caffeine can vary by brand, region, type of tree, altitude, bean size, roast color and brew method.  I just found out one tree can produce different caffeine levels in its beans.  The higher quality coffee tree is the Arabica.  This one has less caffeine than the Robusta which is the lower quality.  We are a Specialty Coffee Roaster so we only use Arabica beans.  The darker the roast the less caffeine is in coffee.  My research states between 75 and 130mg of caffeine is in the Arabica beans.  With so many varying factors, if you are looking to reduce your caffeine consumption, may I suggest some options; first, if you want to eliminate the most caffeine, switch to decaffeinated.  Ours actually taste good if you don’t mind me adding my opinion. Second, try filling your cup with ½ decaf and ½ regular and use 100mg as the number, knowing there may be some variance there.   I am still investigating and enjoying the journey so far.  Let me leave you with a bit of trivia.  Why does a coffee tree produce caffeine?  It’s the tree’s natural pesticide.    The sole purpose is to repel insects.  I will be back with you as I find out more.

The Pennsylvania Inaugural Ball in Honor of Governor Tom Corbett and the First Lady Susan Corbett and Lieutenant Governor Jim Cawley and his wife Suzanne was held in the evening of January 18, 2011.  Cafe Excellence was asked to be the coffee served at this event. Irene Satterwhite and Cindy Combs of Cafe Excellence provided assistance to the catering staff and the evening was a great success.  We wish Governor Tom Corbett and his administration, along with all of the state of Pennsylvania workers, the Best of Luck.
